Director Roulo
Blake Roulo was named Averett University's men's wrestling head coach in August 2019 after serving as an assistant coach for two seasons with the Cougars. Roulo, who joined the Averett wrestling team as an assistant coach in July 2017, became the second head coach in the program's history.
Since taking over the helm of the Averett men's wrestling program, Roulo has guided the Cougars to success at the national level, producing eight All-Americans, three regional champions and nine NCAA Division III national qualifiers (not including 10 NWCA national qualifiers in 2021 when the NCAA did not host a national tournament). During each of his first four seasons, Averett earned a national ranking with numerous individual national and regional rankings. Roulo also coached the Cougars to a program-record 23 dual wins during the 2021-22, including a win over Division I Bellarmine University.
In his first season as head coach during the 2019-20, Averett continued to make history as the Cougars had two wrestlers qualify for the NCAA national championships, including the program's first NCAA regional champion. In 2019-20 under Roulo, the program produced its first two d3wrestle.com All-Americans, its first of two d3wrestle.com All-Freshman Team selections and its first Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) State Rookie of the Year while totaling three all-state selections and one national wrestler of the week selection. Roulo also guided the Cougars to a then-program-best nine dual victories.
Roulo followed that impressive first season with an even more impressive 2020-21 campaign. The Cougars earned a top-15 national ranking and finished ninth as a team at the NWCA Division III national championships. The Cougars also finished a program-best 10-1 in dual competitions, which included wins over four Division II schools and one Division I club team. The Cougars had six wrestlers ranked during the season, including their first No. 1 national ranking (Sam Braswell at 125 pounds). Roulo had three wrestlers earn NWCA All-America honors and six wrestlers earn VaSID All-State Team recognition.
In 2021-22, Averett continued to find national success through a top-25 national ranking as a team with multiple wrestlers earning national rankings. Averett had four NCAA Division III national qualifiers, with Braswell and Brandon Woody both becoming the first Cougars to place at the national tournament while earning All-America honors. The Cougars set a program record with 23 dual wins, including the only win over a Division I team by a non-Division I team. Roulo produced Averett's second regional champion, second VaSID State Rookie of the Year and three VaSID All-State selections as the team won its first Southeast Wrestling Conference Tournament title. Roulo was also named the Southeast Wrestling Conference Coach of the Year.
In 2022-23, Averett earned a share of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship in its first season in the league. Roulo again guided the Cougars to a national ranking as the Cougars totaled 18 dual wins. Averett produced three ODAC individual champions and seven placers at the conference tournament before going on to have five wrestlers place at NCAA regionals, including the program's third region champion at 125 pounds. Three Cougars qualified for the NCAA Division III national championships, where Mason Barrett finished sixth to earn All-America honors. Two Cougars received all-state honors following the season.
As an assistant coach prior to taking over as head coach, Roulo was instrumental in helping three Averett wrestlers to qualify for the Division III national championships for the first time in the program's two-year existence. Roulo also helped mentor one Virginia Duals Outstanding Wrestler and one Southeast Conference Wrestler of the Week. In addition, he coached several individual open tournament champions.
Roulo came to Averett from Southern Virginia University, where he was an assistant coach for one season and helped guide the Knights to five program records during the 2016-17 season. His coaching experience also includes time as a camp counselor and clinician with the Ken Chertow Wrestling Camps, as a Patriot Elite RTC student coach at George Mason and private sessions, camps and clinics since 2011.
A native of Petersburg, Virginia, Roulo wrestled collegiately at Division I George Mason University, where he was a four-year starter and four-time all-conference selection. He finished second in the conference in 2012 and 2013, fifth in 2015 and fourth in 2016. Roulo was ranked as high as No. 12 in the NCAA rankings and qualified for the 2013 NCAA Tournament. In 2015, he finished fifth at the Greco Roman University Nationals in Akron, Ohio. Prior to his time at George Mason, Roulo was an eight-time National High School Coaches Association national champion and was named the NHSCA Wrestler of the Year in 2011 while also becoming a four-time Olympic style Fargo All-American.
Roulo earned his bachelor's degree in history from George Mason in 2016. He finished his master's degree in business administration from Averett in 2019.
